What is the Universal Standard (US) Club?
In the past, the most popular sale every year at Universal Standard (sizes 00-40) was Mystery Boxes. You’d pay a fixed amount to get a themed box at a deep discount. No returns. Last year they announced they weren’t going to do Mystery Boxes anymore, but would have something better to replace it. The (US) Club launched in January 2024 and sold out in 5 hours. It was a pre-styled surprise box that you could choose to purchase at 2 price points: 1 nonrefundable, and 1 refundable. The refundable option is, of course, higher priced, but it helps ease some worry from people who are worried about getting things that don’t suit them.
You can see what I received in my January (US) Club box on Instagram. It was a nice fine gauge knit and cupro top, nice flowy elastic waist pants with a satin tuxedo stripe and slits at the hem, and a black trench coat. I was very happy with all 3 pieces.
The February (US) Club dropped a few days ago with more selection – there are several themed boxes to choose from, reminiscent of Mystery Boxes. The most popular Mystery Box from years past, Surprise Me, is back and is always the most popular and deeply discounted of the bunch. There are other boxes with new styles in themes like “Spring Blossoming” and “Je ne Sais Quoi.”
How is The (US) Club different from Mystery Boxes?
The programs are honestly very similar, but there are a couple key differences that I can find between the two programs:
- Frequency: Mystery Boxes were usually twice a year. US Club drops monthly
- Choose your price: You can buy at a standard (US) Club box rate and have the option of returning items, or you can save an additional 30% off if you agree to not return anything (nonrefundable.)
- Refundable option – it helps reduce the risk of not liking what you receive.
Is Universal Standard US Club a good value?
I think value is subjective for a lot of people, so this is tricky to answer. Are the discounts good? Yes! But you trade-off the option of choice, unless you choose to pay the higher price for the refundable option. If you’re looking to build your wardrobe with high-quality, classic pieces, I love boxes like these. So many pieces in my wardrobe right now are from previous Mystery Boxes. If you’re very particular about your style and want specific pieces and colors, the US Club might not be the best program for you.
